...the answer in that question can be found below in my response to the Regional Diction Meme that's been making the rounds.  I can't hear much of an accent to my voice at all, but I'll let you be the judge, interwebs ;)

Say the following words:

Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

Now answer these questions:

  • What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
  • What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
  • What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
  • What do you call gym shoes?
  • What do you say to address a group of people?
  • What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
  • What do you call your grandparents?
  • What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
  • What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
  • What is the thing you change the TV channel with?
My audio resonse:

So am I the hayseed that people here in New England seem to think I am?  One thing I'm dead certain of--my accent is nowhere NEAR as thick as the Maine dialect.  Not by a looooong shot!

Wow, it's been awhile!  I'm currently at work, so I can't promise that this will be the most PROLIFIC of posts.  However, I was thinking about a meme I did at the end of 2005 and thought it might be interesting to see what has changed/stayed the same during the last 5 years.  So below, please subject yourself to the horrors that were a 20-year-old Katie.  My answers (embarassing as they are) have been left untouched.  Let's say it's for posterity ;)  The real reason is that I don't think you can grow unless you are unafraid to remind yourself of just how low you've been in the past and use it as a motivator for change.  As a quick recap for 2005, the year started with me dating my best friend and falling in love for the first time.  By July we had a hideous break-up, and by December I had made the decision to drop out of school (I'm sorry...I mean "take a break from college").  It was a pretty dark time for me, but it ended up ok.  I went back a year later and ended up graduating from college, just as I always intended.  The ex and I had an emotionally abusive and VERY unhealthy relationship consisting of fooling around because I was still in love with him and he...well, I don't know.  Guess I was willing?  But after I finally grew a pair and stopped talking to him for a year, we were able to regain our previous friendship (if not the closeness we once had).  He married a friend of mine in September and they're very happy and I'm VERY happy for them.

Ugh...that was a long ramble.  So here you go: stupid Xanga meme, then and now:

This is easily my biggest icon dump to date and consists of icons I've made for fun, as well as icons I submitted as part of tww_iconathon. This is probably the last batch I'll be posting for at least a little bit as I move to Maine in 9 days. Needless to say, I have a lot of packing left to do.

As I've mentioned on this journal before, I have been participating in Phase II of sorkinverse over the course of the summer. It's a fantastic community and has been a really fun way to connect with other people on LiveJournal. It has also given me a great outlet to slowly ease myself into the world of graphic manipulation, which has probably been the most rewarding part. To that end, I'll have another graphic dump posted shortly.

However, this post serves another purpose. One of the final challenges for this round of sorkinverse is to post a list of our Top 5 Favorite Sorkinverse Characters. I'd like to say right now that this list is EXTREMELY fluid. Other than the number one spot (which is pretty much set in stone), my list of favorites varies from day to day. I tried to be as pragmatic as possible, but I still feel bad for the characters I left off. For example, there is no one from Sports Night or Studio 60. A lot of this is because I've only seen those series once all the way through and didn't feel I knew the characters as WELL because of it. Also, there are some characters who I LOVE for the majority of their respective shows, but I have serious issues later in the run due to what I feel are poor character choices. This is my meager attempt at explaining why CJ Cregg and Leo McGarry didn't make the list. Much as I love them, I just had too many serious issues with them in the Wells years to put them on such a short list.

So without further ado, here is the list as it currently stands (and my apologies to any characters who didn't make the cut):

Well, here's another one! As you can see, sorkinverse has gotten pretty good at keeping me busy with the graphic challenges. These two icon batches were made for the International Youth Day Challenge. The requirement was to create fanart of characters in their youth (defined as between the ages of 12-25). I'm also including some graphics that I started messing with before I realied that the pictures I was manipulating were of a character younger than 12.

As always, you're welcome to take whatever you'd like (as long as you give me credit). I also GLADLY welcome any concrit or feedback you care to leave. I'm still a graphic neophyte and would love feedback on which manipulations work and which ones...don't.

More angst/youth-ridden graphics than you can shake a stick at! :)Collapse )

Here's the latest batch of icons I've done. These were made last night in response to a challenge on sorkinverse. The challenge was to create something inspired by the pilot of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I like the 1st group of these better than the second, but I'm still pleased with them overall. Plus they took a LOT less time than some others; I'm getting better of knowing what I want without wasting a lot of time fussing around with effects. All icons were created using the FotoFlexer tools on Photobucket. Someday I'll crack down and learn how to use the GIMP software I downloaded; I just don't have the time or patience right now. Not to mention I think it'd be very hard to do complicated manips just using the touchpad on my laptop.

Please feel free to take whatever you want; I'd be more than flattered! I just ask that you give me credit and drop me a line if you do want something. The egomaniac in me would like that very much, indeed ;)

Yeah, so I kinda let the TV Meme die a little bit there.  I fully intend to come back to it, but I'll be honest--things are a wee bit hectic these days.

The reason I'm making this post is because I wanted to dump some icon bases I made earlier tonight.  They were created for the Team Icon challenge on sorkinverse.  I'm not a huge fan of the versions I submitted (I really suck at adding text), but I LOVED the bases.  Hence, I'm putting them up here.  Concrit is MORE than welcome as I'm still wading my way through the whole graphics thing.  Feel free to take whatever you want (if anyone actually wants them), but please give me credit.  I spent a LONG time on these and have the pain in my wrist to prove it ;)

First of all, my deepest apologies for posting this a day late. I was going to do it on my lunch break yesterday, but then I ended up working through lunch so I could get my computer set up (long story). Then I didn't get off work until 7 and ended up going to my parents' to watch Psych with my dad. By the time I got home, it was 11:30 and I more or less passed out. I do want to get back on schedule, however, so I will be posting Day Six as well. I'll try to space them out a bit.

Day Five: A show you hate

This was one of the more difficult ones for me to come up with an answer for. While I am picky about what I watch, I also have a tendency to avoid shows that I don't think will interest me. Therefore, any shows I could think of that I dislike or that annoy me didn't exactly qualify for the meme because I've never actually watched them. It didn't seem fair to include a show I've never watched for some reason. So after much thought and deliberation, I finally decided on the following. It's a show I USED to like but haven't watched in years (and for good reason):

Photobucket

American Idol.

Like everyone else under the sun, I LOVED this show when it first aired. I tuned in every week during that first summer to watch the rise of Kelly Clarkson (whom I still love). The second season was even better--I am happy to admit that I voted multiple times for Clay Aiken and even own a couple of his albums. You may mock, but at least LISTEN to his Christmas CD--it's one of the better ones I've heard recently. Because he actually SINGS the songs and has unsynthesized orchestrations; when I'm listening to traditional Christmas songs, that's what I'm looking for.

Anyway, I digress. Where the wheels came off the wagon between myself and AI is when Jennifer Hudson was voted off in Season 3. I was so disgusted with the process that I stopped watching and, I am proud to say, have never looked back. As the seasons progress and I see them beating that dead horse into the ground, I can't really say that I regret my decision. Ryan Seacrest is an annoying tool, the product placement is ridiculous, and it's become painfully obvious that America is voting for style over substance.

Incidentally, I did have my own American Idol-related experience when I was on vacation in Disney World last September. If you're at all interested, you can read about it at my blog.

Day Four: Your favorite show ever

Now this one gave me some serious thought. If you had asked me even a month ago what my favorite tv show of all time was, I would've picked Veronica Mars without even breaking a sweat. However, after much thought and careful deliberation (much more deliberation than a question like this really requires), I've come to the conclusion that VM can no longer qualify as my favorite show. While it is still a VERY close second, it has been replaced by:

The West Wing.

I know, I know. The biggest surprise here is probably that I even had to think about it in the first place. However, I have spent YEARS under the very firm belief that nothing would ever take Veronica Mars' place in my heart. The first season of that show is just about the closest thing to television perfection that there is.

And then came The West Wing. While VM had a perfect first season followed by two uneven (but still quite excellent) seasons, The West Wing had 4 seasons of pure unbridled genius and three uneven seasons. The last six episodes of TWW season two are absolutely mesmerizing and even when the show lost its luster following the departure of Sorkin/Schlamme, it still had a power that is practically unrivaled. I could happily watch nothing but The West Wing for the rest of my life and not feel too deeply cheated by everything else I was missing.

It has drama, pathos, comedy of every shape and measure, depth, romance, and still manages to inspire me every time I watch it. As you can imagine, TWW is going to pop up a few more times on this list, so I'll leave it here for now. Suffice it to say, if you haven't at LEAST watched the first two seasons of this show, you are doing yourself a great disservice.
